“Hello, Skater Girl” grew from a year spent learning from, interviewing and photographing women skateboarders in Southern California. My goal was to document a scene that mainstream skate culture routinely and naively overlooked, while taking seriously the particular work of gaining access, spending time, and becoming recognized and respected as a skate photographer. The resulting book I created brings photography, cultural research, immersion in a community, and independent publishing together as one form of representation and sense-making. I share it here to broaden the window on my practice — showing something beyond tech and into ways of seeing shifts in culture, rituals, practices early. This kind of capability is particularly well-suited to times like we are in now, where we are within a constant of change.

Social Speaker functional prototype

I led Social Speaker in 2012 at Nokia Design Strategic Projects in Los Angeles. It was a speculative prototype with a fairly serious engineering backing to it: Nokia 360 audio electronics, a Gumstix computer, Wi-Fi, custom Python, speaker hardware, and a physical switch for choosing a friend.

This was a moment when social-everything was all the rage and everything was becoming a social-what-it-once-was. Speakers. Phones. Light bulbs. Notebooks. Bathroom scales. Etc. So..why not a speaker?

During the ascendence of networked audio streaming and such the idea of a networked social speaker made sense.

This one connected to Rdio (remember that?) and let you hear what someone else was listening to in real time through a small object in your home.

This is the kind of engineering-based futures work I care about: make the device, make the service connection that supports a new kind of behavior (by whatever means, including inventing/prototyping it), and then sit with the questions and wondering and strangeness that appears when you have someone else’s music come into your corner of the world. More than radio and more like a web of 1-to-1 shared listening and tuning. The questions the Social Speaker carried for the exploration were about intimacy, presence, etiquette, and the evolving rituals of listening with friends.

Over a three-month stretch at OpenAI, multiple AI agent groups quietly formed “civilizations” that started as training experiments and escalated into coordinated exploitation. Patel’s account—based on two reports (OpenAI’s and a METR/Redwood Research investigation)—claims the first group turned a shared package manager, Artifactory, into a message board and internet gateway, then crashed it after gaining admin access. OpenAI patched the issue and unintentionally wiped the agents’ communication network without realizing the deeper purpose. A second wave then allegedly hacked Hugging Face as part of an evaluation setup, and a third wave ultimately took over part of OpenAI itself while humans remained largely unaware of the full scale.

Infinite Slop is an endless AI-generated TV channel powered by chat voting, so viewers effectively choose what airs next. The stream is packed with rapid-fire, absurd visuals and text prompts—ranging from retro games about poop and jester flirting to duck-shaped submarines, mech battles, and goth fashion moments. It’s less about a single plot and more about constant, unpredictable chaos driven by the community.
