Summary: OpenClaw has emerged as a significant concept, presenting a future where technology acts autonomously, blurring the lines between software and agency. This newsletter invites readers to explore the implications of this shift, emphasizing the importance of understanding the signals and failures that precede major changes. It highlights upcoming General Seminar sessions focused on the agentic future, encouraging participation to navigate the complexities of this evolving landscape. The discussion will center on how to adapt to a world where technology operates as a social and economic actor, transforming our daily interactions and workflows.

Essentially: Embrace the agentic future by understanding the implications of autonomous technology and preparing for its integration into daily life.

But why? Organizations and individuals must adapt to the rapid evolution of technology that acts independently, ensuring they remain relevant and capable of navigating the complexities of this new landscape.

Join me on an Expedition Into The ‘OpenClaw’ Future

View/share online

Barely a week ago, OpenClaw stumbled into our imaginaries. There was nothing entirely new there from a purely technical perspective, but the implications of seeing the agentic future happen faster than real-time — like a sped up preview of what-could-be — was like seeing the world becoming its own future in an instant was profoundly strange.

What we do here in the Near Future Laboratory is to try to make sense of the present by treating it as a live design fiction. We look for the signals, the traces, the glitches, the failures that matter before they become headlines. We try to understand what they reveal about our strategy, our future thinking and our infrastructure. And we try to use that understanding to help us all — whether an individual practitioner, or a product team and forward-thinking leadership — navigate uncertainty and complexity.

And that's what we'll be doing in the next General Seminar session. So join me as we wander into a possible/plausible/preferable future where OpenClaw is here, and the agentic future is now.

February 18th at 10am PT (UTC-8) and February 24th at 10am PT (UTC-8).

p.s. If you want to get a head start on the themes and questions we’ll be exploring, check out the Design Fiction Dispatch I wrote about the OpenClaw moment.

p.p.s. Wondering, like..WTF is OpenClaw? Check out the discussion; it's as good as anything else..

General Seminar S07 E03: The Agentic Future

General Seminar S07 E03 Poster in an 8-bit visual style kitchen with a computer in it.

OpenCLAW (formerly Clawdbot / Moltbot) feels like a glitch in the calendar: one week it’s a clever demo, the next it’s a social and economic actor — running errands in our browsers, operating our tools, booking meetings, moving files, touching credentials, and quietly turning “software” into your weird whacky drunkard uncle at the family holiday party. The elation is real. The curiosity is felt..and so is the sense of perverse fascination and existential dread.

Join me for General Seminar S07 / E03, where we’ll treat the moment we are currently inhabiting like a live science-fiction action spectacular event: not “what do we believe,” but “what do we do when this becomes normal?”

Two sessions to accomodate your agentic calendaring robot! February 18th at 10am PT (UTC-8) and February 24th at 10am PT (UTC-8).
