Summary: Midweek dispatch: a final nudge to join today’s LinkedIn Live on “Operationalizing Imagination” (with Damien Newman, Brad Topliff, and Howard B. Esbin, PhD), plus a community side-project to build a Meshtastic LoRa mesh, a studio note on Ghostwriter’s Vibewriter experiment (LLM-driven cyberpunk writing, locally), a shout to Scott Paterson’s Field Report, Bruce Sterling’s Roman multitool reconstruction, and an open invite to the Near Future Laboratory Discord/Patreon and weekly Office Hours. Also: a classic blog pull, “The Internet Used To Come In A Box.”

Essentially: Show up, make with us, and treat imagination like an operational discipline—today on LinkedIn Live and this week in the lab (Meshtastic build, Ghostwriter/Vibewriter, community Office Hours).

But why? Because imagination only compounds when it’s practiced in public: live conversations to set direction, side-projects to turn ideas into artifacts, and a supportive community to keep the momentum—so leaders and teams can prototype the future before the brief exists.

Community Action Office Hours - The Side Projects Edition

A Side Project

We're building Meshtastic radios

A Side Project

Dré Labre presented a hot-take on Meshtastic radios in last week's Office Hours and proposed that we do a collective build of a Meshtastic radio network as a side project. If you're interested in joining in, check out the details and sign up! This week will be a discussion/planning session.
What's Meshtatic?
It's a project that uses inexpensive, low-power LoRa radios to create a mesh network for off-grid communication. It's a fun way to explore decentralized communication and build something useful together. And it's super futuristic.
If you want to join us, consider supporting this work by becoming a member of the Near Future Laboratory through Patreon. Your support helps us keep doing what we do — and a big thank you to all of the current members!

Vibewriter

Vibewriter

Prototypes in AI, or ‘Less Yammering. More Hammering.’

Vibewriter is a feature of Ghostwriter, an open-source AI writing assistant I built as a study in the AI Designed Fictions Research Studio. It allows you to generate text in a specific style or tone, based on a prompt you provide. It's a fun way to explore the creative possibilities of AI-generated text.
This particular post is an experiment using Ghostwriter’s Vibewriter mode to generate a cyberpunk story with the Llama 3.2-3b-instruct model running locally in LM Studio.

Scott Paterson Field Report

Scott Paterson Field Report

Exploring Technology and Society

Scott Paterson is an old friend and collaborator from back in my NYC Art+Technology days. He's been running a Substack called Field Report for a while now, and it's a great read. Scott is a thoughtful writer and a keen observer of the world around him. His posts often explore the intersection of technology, culture, and society, and he has a knack for finding interesting stories and perspectives that you won't find anywhere else.
FIELD REPORT (FR) explores the following conundrums to equip upcoming leaders and change-makers by fostering discovery and amplifying our curiosity.

Bruce's New Multi-tool

Recreating an Ancient Multi-tool

Recreating an Ancient Multi-tool

I got a mail the other day from His Eminence Bruce Sterling who reminded me of his affinity for a good multi-tool. He then proceeded to mention that he's gone deep on these multitools from Roman antiquity...and decided to recreate one.
I don't have the full story, and I suggested the Bruce come to Office Hours The Side Projects Edition and share it with the gang. He put up some photos of all this on Flickr. Crazy stuff!

I host weekly Office Hours for Patrons — now for 281 weeks and running — every Friday at 0900 (UTC-7 / California). It's a great way to connect, ask questions, and get feedback on your projects.

Each week two people from the community present a project, idea, or challenge and we discuss it together. It's a great way to get feedback, learn from others, and connect with like-minded people.

All of this is done in a friendly, supportive, and welcoming environment. We have people from all over the world, from all walks of life, and with all kinds of interests. It's a great way to meet new people, network, show what you can do, and learn from each other.

In this time of rapid change and uncertainty, it's more important than ever to have a community of people who can support you, challenge you, and help you grow. The Near Future Laboratory is that community.
