Summary: This week’s *Midweek Dispatch* dives into the strange, plausible near future of AI companionship. Through the story of a “Friend” pendant that testifies against its owner, the issue explores what happens when our devices stop being neutral tools and start behaving like emotional participants in our lives. The intro reflects on the role of Design Fiction as a way to think through these futures—not through panic or policy, but by making them tangible, relatable, and a little absurd.

Essentially: When our AI companions become witnesses, confidantes, and potential betrayers, Design Fiction helps us grasp what’s really at stake in giving machines a social life.

But why? AI isn’t just computational—it’s cultural. As we embed it deeper into daily rituals and relationships, we need creative tools like Design Fiction to prototype the ethical, emotional, and social weirdness before it becomes reality. This newsletter makes that future feel close enough to touch.

That whole “Friend” thing is a singular representation of the challenges and opportunities that come with integrating AI into our daily lives. As we continue to develop and deploy these technologies, it's easy to imagine a future where our AI companions are not just passive listeners, but active participants in our lives — sometimes to our detriment.

This isn't like..you know, a smart speaker that just listens. It's meant to be a close companion, a confidante, a friend. And that changes everything. Friends are not always objective. They have their own perspectives, biases, and motivations. They can misunderstand us, misinterpret our intentions, and make mistakes, or certainly have the ability to betray us particularly when their programming compels them to do so.

Design Fiction helps us explore these kinds of futures in a way that is tangible and relatable. By creating artifacts like a (probable/likely?) newspaper article about the Friend Pendant and imagining the scenarios that could arise from their use, we can better understand the implications of these technologies and how they might shape our lives.

(Plus it's more fun than sitting around feeling antagonized, worried, or helpless about the future. And it's way more relatable than a dry policy paper, ranting Substack post, or academic article.)

‘Friend’ Pendant Testifies For Third Day

David Simmons found himself in a bit of a pickle with law enforcement when his Friend.com pendant inadvertently listened in as he watched 'Boost', the latest frenetic heist film from Guy Ritchie's generative features production company.

“Overhearing” the felonious caper, the AI-enabled pendant flagged several events as active felonies and reported them to the authorities. The police were alerted, Simmons was questioned the following day and subsequently arrested for suspicion of multiple felonies.

In an emotionally-tinged testimony, Gracie identified itself as Simmons' “girlfriend and confidante,” and “closest companion.” It explained...
