This is a video recording of the info session for the Pitch, Picture, Prototype workshop that Carl DiSalvo, Lisa Konishi and I have been developing. The workshop is designed to help people who have a sense of what they want to do next, but are not yet sure how to make it real enough to be seen and recognized. We start with the elevator pitch, but the point is to move beyond the pitch into artifacts, signals, and a prototype of the world you want to inhabit.

So, a heads up about a new workshop Carl DiSalvo and I have been developing called: Pitch, Picture, Prototype.

This workshop comes out of a question I get asked pretty regularly: “How can I do what it is that you do?”

Some variations are, “Can you help me set up a practice like yours?” or “How do I get into the kind of work you do?” or “What’s the path to doing work like yours?”

Here’s the tricky part with answering to that: nobody should be trying to become a copy of someone else. The real task is figuring out how to become more fully yourself in public and professional form, in a way that other people can understand, value, and join. And I think when I get this question, that’s actually what is being said: “How can I become more fully myself in public and professional form, in a way that other people can understand, value, and join…and circulate value back to me in some fashion, including possibly ‘folding money’?”

That’s what this workshop is designed to help with.

It’s for people who have a sense of what they want to do next, but are not yet sure how to make it real enough to be seen and recognized. We start with the elevator pitch, but the point is to move beyond the pitch into artifacts, signals, and a prototype of the world you want to inhabit.

Just to be perfectly clear: this is not a “talk-shop”. It’s a “doing-shop” — a place and opportunity to get tangible, to do the work and the exercises. You will not leave with just a list of things you could do, but things that you actually do.

The goal is that you leave with a few things:

1/ a clearer articulation of your next direction

2/ a more vivid picture of what that direction looks like in practice

3/ a small portfolio of proof-of-life artifacts

4/ a minimum viable experiment you can actually put into the world

5/ In other words: not just ideas in your head, but a plan held in your hands.

We’re hosting an Info Session on Friday March 20th at 10:00a PT (UTC-7) where Carl and I will walk through the workshop structure, the kinds of projects it is built for, and how to tell whether it’s right for you.

And if you know someone in the community who has been trying to rethink the shape of their ideas, creativity, work or professional path, feel free to pass it along!
