City of Quartz : Excavating the Future in Los Angeles (Vintage) by Mike Davis

Why do I blog this? Mike Davis’ City of Quartz was the first book I read in my first seminar while pursuing my Ph.D. At the time, I was coming off a summer exploratory research grant trying to season my thinking on the game SimCity2000. City of Quartz was probably the first reading that provided a different framework through which to “read” a city’s dynamics and its social politics. (The image Davis paints of scavenging homeless bums wandering the streets, trundling their found scraps, clothing and food, and his description of them as “urban bedouins” stuck over the years and is what I drew from for the name of the WiFi.Bedouin project.
